Business Continuity Update from Ella Cheong – 18 March 2020

Dear friends and colleagues,

Like other regions of the world, ASEAN is facing the issue of an escalating COVID-19 pandemic. Our sincere thoughts go out to you in these trying times.  We earnestly hope for an expeditious easing of this serious global health concern.

Singapore update:  Since early January, Singapore has responded swiftly to the threat with calibrated precautionary measures.  While the spread of the virus has been effectively delayed in Singapore, the country is taking nothing for granted. In line with the government’s recommendations, we have implemented a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) in our Singapore office which incorporates social distancing initiatives to minimise physical interaction. As a result, a third of our Singapore staff has been rostered to work from home since February.  We will continue to monitor the situation closely and adapt our BCP to changes that may arise, in order to facilitate our continued business operations and minimise disruptions to our work.

Malaysia update: In response to a sharp rise in infection incidents, the government has imposed a nation-wide lockdown.  As such, the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office (MyIPO) and our Kuala Lumpur office are now closed from 18 – 31 March 2020, with an expectation to re-open on 1 April 2020, barring unforeseen circumstances. Just as in Singapore, our Malaysia staff have similarly been organized to operate from home during this period.  You may also wish to note the following temporary measures announced by MyIPO:

  • Priority deadlines will be extended to 1 April 2020
  • Deadlines applicable to office actions and oppositions will be extended to 30 April 2020
  • Patent and design renewals falling due will be extended to 1 April 2020
  • Trade marks expiring between 27 December 2019 and 27 March 2020 may be renewed by 30 April 2020
